The myth of the Turing machine: the failings of functionalism and related theses

چکیده

The properties of Turing’s famous `universal machine’ has long sustained functionalist intuitions about the nature of cognition. This paper shows that there is a logical problem with standard functionalist arguments for multiple realizability. These arguments rely essentially on Turing’s powerful insights regarding computation. In addressing a possible reply to this criticism, it is further argued that functionalism is not a useful approach for understanding what it is to have a mind. In particular, it is shown that the di culties involved in distinguishing implementation from function make multiple realizability claims untestable and uninformative . As a result, it is concluded that the role of Turing machines in philosophy of mind needs to be reconsidered.

Some improvements in fuzzy turing machines

In this paper, we improve some previous definitions of fuzzy-type Turing machines to obtain degrees of accepting and rejecting in a computational manner. We apply a BFS-based search method and some level’s upper bounds to propose a computational process in calculating degrees of accepting and rejecting. Next, we introduce the class of Extended Fuzzy Turing Machines equipped with indeterminacy s...

Bayesian perspective over time

Thomas Bayes, the founder of Bayesian vision, entered the University of Edinburgh in 1719 to study logic and theology. Returning in 1722, he worked with his father in a small church. He also was a mathematician and in 1740 he made a novel discovery which he never published, but his friend Richard Price found it in his notes after his death in 1761, reedited it and published it. But until L...

The Position of Myth in Frazer’s Anthropological Theory

George James Frazer (1854-1941), the spiritual father of myth-ritual school, was bred up in the British tradition of empiricism. Believing in the evolutionary process of culture, Frazer mainly focused his attention on explaining such epistemic forms of thought as magic, religion and science. Accordingly, while interpreting the processes through which magic leads to religion and finally evolves ...
